DelcoDSA Reading Group - The Colfax Massacre

Join us for our December Reading Group. We will learn about the Colfax massacre of 1873, the legal rulings that stemmed from it and relate it to the “Racecraft” reading group we had in September. In addition, the facilitator had the opportunity to visit Colfax this summer and will have pictures of the notorious white supremacist monument located in the town. Colfax was noted as “The bloodiest single instance of racial carnage in the Reconstruction era, the Colfax massacre taught many lessons, including the lengths to which some opponents of Reconstruction would go to regain their accustomed authority,” according to historian Eric Foner. Subsequent legal rulings in the Colfax case effectively ended reconstruction and ushered in the Jim Crow era.
